Man and Van Bloomsbury Health and Safety Policy

Man and Van Bloomsbury is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and delivery activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with man and van services, domestic and commercial removals, packing, loading, transport and unloading.

Policy Statement and Objectives

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property or the environment arising from our work. We will achieve this by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures that are proportionate to the nature and scale of our removal operations.

Management accepts overall responsibility for health and safety performance and will provide the resources, planning and supervision necessary to maintain and continuously improve safe working practices across all jobs and service areas.

Legal Compliance and Responsibilities

We will comply with all applicable health and safety legislation, regulations and industry guidance relevant to moving, handling, transport and storage activities. The management team is responsible for ensuring that this policy is implemented, communicated and periodically reviewed.

Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Staff must cooperate with management by following safe systems of work, using equipment correctly and reporting any hazards, incidents or near misses promptly.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

We will carry out suitable and proportionate risk assessments for our removal services, including but not limited to manual handling, vehicle movements, working in and around customer premises, use of lifting equipment and handling of fragile or heavy items.

Based on these assessments, we will develop safe systems of work and standard operating procedures. These will cover planning jobs, surveying access, parking and loading arrangements, using personal protective equipment, lifting and carrying techniques, team coordination and emergency procedures.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a key part of removal work and a significant source of potential injury. Man and Van Bloomsbury will minimise manual handling risks by using appropriate equipment such as trolleys, dollies, straps and protective coverings, and by ensuring that loads are assessed before lifting.

Employees will receive training in safe lifting and carrying, team handling for bulky items and the correct use of any mechanical aids provided. No worker is expected to lift or carry any load that they believe to be unsafe, excessively heavy or beyond their capability. All equipment will be inspected regularly and taken out of service if found to be defective.

Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety

Our vehicles are a central element of our removal services and will be maintained in a roadworthy condition, with regular checks and servicing. Drivers must hold the appropriate licence, follow road traffic laws and operate vehicles in a responsible manner at all times.

We will plan routes and schedules to reduce pressure on drivers, encourage safe loading practices to ensure vehicles are stable and secure, and require that loads are properly restrained to prevent movement in transit. Drivers must carry out pre-use checks and report any defects immediately.

Customer Premises and Public Safety

Our teams work in a variety of settings, including homes, offices, storage sites and shared spaces. We will take reasonable steps to protect customers, visitors and members of the public from risks arising from our operations.

This includes maintaining clear walkways where possible, using warning signs or verbal warnings when moving large items, managing trip and slip hazards, and controlling access to areas where loading, unloading or packing is taking place. Our staff are required to respect customer property and to work in a tidy and considerate manner.

Training, Communication and Consultation

All employees will receive appropriate induction and ongoing training relevant to their role, including manual handling, use of equipment, vehicle safety, incident reporting and emergency procedures. We will provide additional training when new equipment, processes or risks are introduced.

We encourage open communication and consultation on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions about safer ways of working. Management will respond promptly to legitimate concerns and will not tolerate victimisation of anyone who reports a health and safety issue.

Welfare, Fitness for Work and Wellbeing

We recognise that removal work can be physically demanding. We will take reasonable steps to ensure that staff are fit for work and not put at risk by fatigue, illness or the use of alcohol or drugs. Employees must present themselves fit for duty and inform management if they are taking medication or have a condition that could affect their ability to work safely.

Suitable welfare arrangements will be provided, including rest breaks and access to drinking water during longer jobs. We support a culture where workers feel able to raise concerns about workload, stress or physical strain so that adjustments can be considered.

Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as reasonably practicable. We will investigate these events to identify underlying causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Our teams will be briefed on emergency procedures relevant to the environments in which they work, including fire safety, evacuation routes and first aid arrangements. Vehicles will carry basic first aid supplies, and at least one trained first aider will be available or contactable during operations where reasonably practicable.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

Man and Van Bloomsbury will monitor health and safety performance through incident data, feedback from staff and customers, and periodic workplace inspections. This policy and the associated procedures will be reviewed regularly, and at least annually, to ensure they remain effective and reflect changes in legislation, guidance or the nature of our removal services.

By working together and following this Health and Safety Policy, we aim to deliver reliable man and van and removal services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone involved in or affected by our activities.
